Etienne Geoffroy St.Hilaire was Lamarck's embryologist student who came up with the term "transmutation" to describe this idea. Charles Lyell, in his Principles of Geology, published in 1833, criticized the idea of evolution, and borrowed the term from Geoffroy's student.

Evolutionary biologists define evolution more recently as a process in which living creatures develop traits to improve their chances of living or conceiving offspring. Over time, genetic variability can cause a population to acquire new physical characteristics or biological functions. This shift in gene frequency is known as natural selection and it is the main driver of evolutionary changes. However other changes that are not genetic, such as the growth in muscle mass due to diet or exercise cannot be considered to be examples of evolution because they are not passed on to future generations.

Creationists make the argument that evolution is controversial despite the fact that it has been proven true by thousands of scientific tests and it has stood the test of time. They claim that the theory shouldn't be taught in schools. In South Korea, creationists won a few victories against evolution in high school textbooks. OECs are less well known However, they are just as enthusiastic about their beliefs as YECs. OECs believe the universe and Earth are billions-of-years old and that evolution is a myth.

Both forms of creationism deny that scientific principles like natural selection and abiogenesis can explain the origin of life on Earth. They argue that evolution is not possible because it requires miracles. The founders of modern scientific thought resisted miracles in fear that they would lose their credibility.

Some creationists believe in naturalistic evolution and also special creation and call their view “theistic evolution.” This is also known as "continuous evolutionism" or the "evolution of the created species." The theory says that God creates species from scratch and allows them to evolve over time. Eventually, these evolutionary changes will produce new species that are similar to the original ones.

Others believe that God created the universe and all living things in a single event, called the Great Flood. Creationists believe that all species were created at the same moment and then gradually evolved. They reject the idea of abiogenesis and assert that self-replicating life cannot arise from nonliving matter.

In general, the creationists are against teaching evolution in schools. This position is supported by a variety of professional organizations which include the National Science Teachers Association, the Association for Science Teacher Education and the American Anthropological Association, and the Geological Society of America. However, some academic institutions and scientists are more flexible, and permit the inclusion of creationism and evolution in their curricula.

The publishers of textbooks for high school students have recently announced that they will eliminate references to evolution from their textbooks. A group dubbed the Society for Textbook Revise (STR), an independent body that is an offshoot of the Korea Association for Creation Research which is the driving force behind the campaign. STR has secured its first victory by removing instances of the evolution of the horse as well as an avian ancestor called the Archeopteryx from textbooks. It is now focusing on removing snippets of Darwin's notorious finch research as well as on human evolution as well.

STR claims to have the support of 4,000 families and individuals. On August 6 and 7, 1993, coinciding with the World Expo opened in Daejeon, KACR held a second International Symposium on Creation Research. Six lecturers from around the world including ICR's John Morris, Duane Gish, and Steven Austin spoke to audiences of several thousand. KACR and its members have given lectures on creation science in major seminaries too. KACR intends to establish a Creation Science Education Center.
